Shuster Thanks Senator Ayotte for Continuing His Fight Against The "Missile to Nowhere"

Washington - Congressman Bill Shuster issued the following statement regarding Senator Kelly Ayotte’s efforts to eliminate the “Missile to Nowhere”:

“For the past two years, I have led the effort in the House of Representatives to eliminate wasteful government spending on the Medium Extended Air Defense System (MEADS).  I want to thank Senator Ayotte for continuing the fight in the United States Senate,” said Shuster.

Background

Shuster successfully secured language in the 2013 National Defense Authorization Act to prohibit the funding of the MEADS system.  On March 22, 2013, Senator Ayotte offered an amendment to the Senate Budget legislation that would continue Shuster’s efforts to eliminate the funding for the MEADS program.

The problems with MEADShave been well documented. The program, which was intended to replace the Patriot missile system, has been plagued with cost overruns of nearly $2 billion and is 10 years behind schedule. A March 2011 Congressional Budget Office report recommended terminating MEADS in favor of continued production and upgrading of the Patriot missile system.

Earlier this year, the Obama Administration and the Department of Defense tried to circumvent the will of Congress and reestablish funding for the MEADS program.  Shuster sent a letter to the Department of Defense and took to the House floor to ensure that the program remains unfunded.

“Following our actions in the House, Senator Ayotte’s amendment to eliminate funds for MEADS in the Senate budget, shows the continued efforts in both chambers to be fiscally responsible by eliminating wasteful spending on such irresponsible programs as MEADS,” Shuster added.

Copies of the letter and the floor speech are attached.
