Shuster Congratulates Breezewood Volunteer Fire Department on $132,000 GrantWednesday March 13, 2013
Washington - Congressman Bill Shuster is pleased to announce that Breezewood Volunteer Fire Department has been awarded a Department of Homeland Security Assistance to Firefighter Grant (AFG) in the amount of $132,240. The funds will be used to purchase 24 new self-contained breathing units for their firefighters.
“This is great for the first responders at Breezewood Volunteer Fire Department and the people they serve and protect every day,” Shuster said. “This funding will allow them to buy all new breathing units and provide the necessary equipment to keep their firefighters safe while keeping Bedford County safe.”
“We are grateful for the assistance. All of our money comes from donations or fundraisers, so we are very appreciative to Congressman Shuster for his help,” said Breezewood Volunteer Fire Chief Toby Colledge.
“This grant is very important. The bottles you get for these units only last 15 years and it was time for us to purchase all new bottles. We didn’t know where that money was coming from, but this money will allow us to not just replace the bottles, but upgrade the whole system,” said Colledge.
The primary goal of the AFG is to meet the firefighting and emergency response needs of fire departments and nonaffiliated emergency medical service organizations. Since 2001, AFG has helped firefighters and other first responders to obtain critically needed equipment, protective gear, emergency vehicles, training and other resources needed to protect the public and emergency personnel from fire and related hazards.
