Shuster Disappointed on Supreme Court's Decision to Strike Down DOMA06/26/13
Washington – In a 5-4 decision, the Supreme Court handed down its opinion striking down the Defense of Marriage Act’s (DOMA) ban on federal benefits for same-sex married couples. The court ruled DOMA unconstitutional and in violation of the 5th Amendment for singling out same-sex couples and not affording them federal benefits. Congressman Bill Shuster is disappointed in the courts ruling and will continue to work toward a constitutional amendment that upholds marriage as being between a man and a woman.
“I am committed to making sure the long standing tradition of marriage being solely between a man and a woman is upheld. Today, a handful of activist judges attempted to destroy traditional marriage and legislate from the bench. I will continue to work toward legislation that will uphold what I believe to be one of our most important and long-standing traditions,” said Shuster.
