Shuster, Rothfus: Commission the USS SOMERSET in Philadelphia

Washington – Today Congressman Bill Shuster (PA-09) and Congressman Keith Rothfus (PA-12) introduced legislation encouraging the US Navy to have the commissioning ceremony for the USS SOMERSET in Philadelphia.  The USS SOMERSET is intended to honor the passengers and crew aboard United Airlines Flight 93, whose selfless actions prevented the terrorist hijackers from reaching their intended target on September 11, 2001 – the United States Capitol.

“As a testament to those heroes who gave their lives to protect others, we are urging that the commission ceremony for the USS SOMERSET be held in the Commonwealth in which they made their ultimate sacrifice,” said Shuster.

“The selfless sacrifice of the men and women on United Airlines Flight 93 must never be forgotten,” said Rothfus. “It would be a fitting tribute to the courageous passengers and crew to commission the USS SOMERSET, which was named in their honor, in Philadelphia, the port closest to Somerset County.”

All members of the Pennsylvania Delegation have signed on to become original co-sponsors of the House Resolution to honor those who perished in Somerset County on September 11, 2001.

Steel from the crash site was melted down and cast into the USS SOMERSET’s bow stem to commemorate the bravery and sacrifice of the Flight 93 passengers and crew. To honor those fallen heroes of that tragic day, the USS SOMERSET commissioning ceremony should be held in the Port of Philadelphia.  This location would serve as a convenient site for families and friends of those fallen, and allow them the opportunity to attend the tribute in Pennsylvania.

The original co-sponsors of the bill include Robert Brady (D-PA), Chaka Fattah (D-PA), Mike Kelley (R-PA), Scott Perry (R-PA), Glenn Thompson (R-PA), Jim Gerlach (R-PA), Patrick Meehan (R-PA), Michael Fitzpatrick (R-PA), Tom Marino (R-PA), Lou Barletta (R-PA), Allyson Schwartz (D-PA), Mike Doyle (D-PA), Charles Dent (R-PA), Joe Pitts (R-PA), Matthew Cartwright (D-PA), and Tim Murphy (R-PA).
