Obamacare has Failed Southwestern Pennsylvanians01/13/17
WASHINGTON, DC – The House passed S. Con. Res. 3 with Congressman Bill Shuster’s support on Friday. This procedural measure allows Congress to begin the process of repealing Obamacare through reconciliation.
“Obamacare is broken, and it has failed my constituents,” said Congressman Shuster. “Premiums have increased, people have lost their doctor, and quality healthcare plans have been eliminated. The House’s action will allow Congress to begin the process of repealing Obamacare and replacing it with healthcare reforms that will be good for all Americans.”
Repealing and replacing Obamacare through the reconciliation process will include several steps. Today’s vote, which already passed in the Senate earlier this week, will allow the reconciliation process to begin.
“If nothing is done by Congress the problems in Obamacare will only worsen,” continued Shuster. “There’s a better way to provide quality healthcare to all Americans and we will work closely with the Trump Administration on implementing new policies that will put in place a system that is sustainable. If nothing is done by Congress, the death spiral of Obamacare will continue.”
What is reconciliation?
Budget reconciliation is a procedural tool that was created in the Congressional Budget Act of 1974 to allow expedited consideration of legislation related to taxes, spending, and debt. Reconciliation bills can be used once a year for each issue but they may be passed with a simple majority vote, bypassing the Senate’s 60 vote threshold to advance legislation.
