Shuster Helps Pass Lifetime Fix for Coal Miner Health Benefits

WASHINGTON, DC - Congressman Bill Shuster offered the following statement after the House of Representatives passed a spending measure which includes funding to permanently secure healthcare benefits for 22,600 retired coal miners and their families.

“With my support, the House of Representatives passed today a permanent fix to the crisis facing our coal miners’ health benefits,” said Shuster. “This is a massive win for thousands of coal miners in western Pennsylvania and across Appalachia, and I thank President Trump for following through on his promise that he would support coal communities.

“Our country has relied on coal as affordable energy for decades; we owe this to the miners who kept our country’s lights on and have been paying for these benefits their entire careers. It isn’t right for our miners to lose their health benefits because the previous administration decided to fight a war on the coal industry. I applaud the president for making sure this fix was in his spending deal and demonstrating why coal country supported him in record numbers last fall.”

Congressman Shuster is a cosponsor of the Miners Protection Act and has been working closely with President Trump and the United Mine Workers Association (UMWA) to find a solution to this funding shortfall.

“My office has received hundreds of calls from distressed coal miners and their families, and I’m proud we have found a solution that will give them instant relief and peace of mind. I encourage my colleagues in the Senate to pass this bill quickly so President Trump can sign it into law,” said Shuster.
